To get the most out of your train journey, choose your ticket class wisely. Consider the length of the trip, time of day, and your own preferences. For longer journeys at night, a first or second class ticket in a sleeper car may be the best solution. Both options allow you to sleep as comfortably as you would on a train and save valuable daylight hours on your vacation.
Note that it is sometimes not possible to book first class tickets for trips as short as a few hours on a longer journey. They are usually reserved for travelers traveling all the way from departure to the final station. However, second class sleepers sometimes with soft seats are a reasonable alternative if 4-5 hours gets you to point B.

Traveling by Train: Pros & Cons
- Rail travel is an ideal solution to avoid congestion. While delays can sometimes occur for a variety of reasons, generally speaking, rush hour, weekends or travel fever won’t ruin your time traveling by rail.
Booking train tickets online helps you save a lot of time. For many destinations, tickets can be booked 90 days before your travel date, which takes planning to the next level. However, last minute deals are also often available. You also don’t have to go to the train station to book a seat – do it wherever you want.
Usually, train tickets are much cheaper than plane tickets. On certain routes, speedboat travel times are equal to or even shorter than air travel if you factor in time spent at the airport going through security and/or customs.
Very often railway stations are located in the city center. It saves you a lot of time to reach your destination. Old railway stations often have the added bonus of the atmosphere of the historic buildings. Traveling to/from such stations can be considered a worthy plus in your overall travel plans.
Besides saving daylight hours for other fun things, a night on the train is a great way to cut down on hotel costs. If you choose a bed, you can also sleep quite well. Definitely better than on a sleeper bus!

Stops are not always clearly announced or marked on some trains. Electronic screens solve this problem easily but are not available everywhere. So make sure you track the stop using GPS or ask the conductor if there is one.
